Darwin is the SPE:C label head and resident DJ at Griessmuehle club in Berlin. Her label was kickstarted by a release from previous mix series guest Decka, and has since seen four more releases of similar intensity. The most recent EP, Behemoth, again from Decka, features hypnotic grooves, tightly-woven drum arrangements and a dub-inspired jam that would fit perfectly within any dance floor-focused set (all of which comes on transparent orange vinyl).

Since November 2016, Darwin has run the party REEF. Since its inception, they have hosted Trevino, Shed, Objekt, A Made Up Sound and Courtesy, to name a few. Housed in a former grain mill in Neukölln, Griessmuehle has one large dance floor inside, a smaller space in the basement and a half-outdoor spot where the club hosts after hours. It has a sprawling garden complete with grain silos, various makeshift structures and benches looking out onto a canal. Her REEF parties are all-night raves that join the dots between UK bass, techno and minimal Berlin electro, and she has picked the perfect space to facilitate her vision. The next REEF event is coming up on September 9th at Griessmuehle, with a line up featuring Kode 9, Evan Baggs and Facta. If you’re based in Berlin, or just fancy a cheap weekend away, make sure you head down to party in the silos. If you’re still deliberating, Darwin’s selections below outline some of most memorable tracks from her REEF parties, and after listening should make for a clear cut decision.

“This was one of the first records I ever bought long before I started DJ’ing. For me, it embodies the true soul of ‘rave’, from the druggy seductive vocal to the acid/electro breakdown. A record that always rescues the floor when I freak the Germans out with too much bass music and a staple not only in my bag but to our party. I keep trying to put it into retirement because I’ve rinsed the living shit out of it, but after 6 months on the shelf I pull it back out, play the flip side for a while and repeat the whole process again. *The cover has a sticker on it that says ‘LIMITED EDITION 10,000 COPIES’ – hard to even imagine that these days…”

“We were very excited to have one of our favorite DJ’s and friend Courtesy as our guest in April, she really tore the roof off the place and this was the track that really got everyone hootin (including myself). I’m mainly allergic to UK oi oi chants at parties, but in Berlin it’s refreshing sometimes, and you know the London lads were all over this one.”

“Any of y’all that have come and stuck around till the wee hours at REEF know we always get the bubbles out at 10am and move to the garden for an old school UKG bump around. Our residents Elissa Suckdog and Rich aka Enchanted Rhythms are two of the best 2-Step selectors in the game and this has been a rinsed out REEF jam since the very beginning. In case you’ve been living under a rock or don’t dig a lil… fun fact, it’s a MJ Cole alias ;)”

“REEF resident Esposito and I are obsessed with this track and I have straight up listened to it on repeat in my living room singing and freakout dancing at least 20 times. It’s always on my iPod to lift my mood and I relate the romantic vocal to my love for clubbing (as cheesy as that sounds). Metalheadz is such a crazy label and the culture surrounding it has an undeniable rebellious spirit, it’s something that has inspired us to put on our party. Esposito and I have both closed our sets with this tune on different occasions and its these moments you bust your ass playing over 5+ hours to get to.”
