TOTD // 31/07 // Alexis Raphael

Published: July 31, 2017, words by John Carter

Alexis Raphael’s musical journey began where many artist’s careers formed in London in the 90s – pirate radio. It wasn’t long after that he gained residencies in some legendary clubs like The Cross and Bagley’s. Although playing in these venues, it wasn’t until 2011 that Alexis Raphael had his big break. After signing to Lee Foss and Jamie Jones’ Hot Waves imprint and appearing on the Hot Waves Volume One compilation, Raphael’s ‘Spaceship’ was chosen as the hottest track on that release by DJ Mag.

Following this, Alexis Raphael’s career has been on a steep upward trajectory. In 2012 DJ Mag named him best breakthrough DJ, the same year he gained a residency at Manchester’s Warehouse Project. In recent years he also relaunched London’s Creche party, which in 2014 branched out to gain a residency at Gatecrasher, Ibiza. To date, Alexis Raphael has toured Europe, Australia and Dubai, and now is booked up pretty much every week.

In terms of production, his brand of house fed with garage grooves and rave aesthetic has gained him releases on Lower East, Hot Creations, Moda Black and Madtech. He also has forthcoming EPs on Green Velvet’s Legendary Relief Records and Skream’s Of Unsound Mind, the latter of which has gained support from big players like Adam Beyer and Tiga.

Following a gig at Fabric this Friday, Alexis Raphael will be gracing the decks of London’s Eastern Electrics festival on Saturday. In celebration of returning to his hometown, and to kick off our Eastern Electrics takeover, we invited him in to soundtrack London’s summertime.

“Most people would probably pick ‘It’s a London thing’ as the London record but for me it’s this. This is when I first got into electronic music. 1992 rave, London anthem. All about the Kuff Mix. One of my rarest and most special vinyl.”

“I wasn’t into dubstep but I know Steve Gurley (aka Foul Play) is credited as being part of the Blueprint. This record, which I do own, is one of my fave 2 step garage tracks from 1998. That generation of tunes sowed the seed for that new London sound – dubstep. Amazing remix.”

“It’s not all about electronic music and being from Camden and having spent many a Christmas meal with close family friend Clive Langer, the producer of Madness…Well, this record has so many connections I have to put it in here.”
