Part of the SuncéBeat takeover

Mr. Mendel has been shooting up the ranks in recent months, and for good reason. His ability to move you emotionally and physically through his soulful sets have gained him much-deserved recognition outside of his hometown of Amsterdam over recent years.

Following his first love of hip-hop, Mr. Mendel found himself working at Waxwell Records where he was introduced to a world of different music, from Brazil to Afro, Soul and Disco to House. It’s these styles (evidently those much sampled in hip-hop) that truly gripped Mendel, who is driven by a philosophy of playing beautiful music with an uplifting spirit.

Over the past few years Mr. Mendel has been touring extensively through Europe and beyond, bringing together records from all corners of the globe that could have been released any time in the past half a century. This may sound like a car-crash of an formula, however his skill lies in creating a mood and a journey that maintains continuity in groove and soul from start to finish.

Mendel has also made his fair share of popular edits, including his hugely sought after version of Trio Ternura’s ‘A Gira’. His ethos when it comes down to playing with old tracks is probably why they have gained so much acclaim, “I like simple edits that keep the soul and dynamics of the song intact, but emphasise something different to the original.” he said in his recent RA podcast interview. His most recent production offering is his remix of Seven Davis Jr’s ‘Rude’. You can check out all Mendel’s mixes and productions over on his Soundcloud.

Mr. Mendel is one of the many talented soulful selectors to be gracing Suncébeat Festival this July. Here, he joins our feature and digs for the Dalmation coast!

“What is summer without some Brazilian tunes? There are too many beautiful songs to choose from. Though this takes me back to Mareh festival in Brazil, where I played last new years eve… Dancing in the sand with a caipirinha in your hand. A nice slow song, for when it’s too hot to dance fast. But with loads of festive energy to it!”

“As a DJ you’re always in search of those tunes that hit you in your heart, mind and hips. You can find songs anywhere; in a record store, online, from friends, etc. This one I got from one of Rush Hour’s store clerks, DJ Bonnefooi. I played it out recently at a house/techno festival, and all the kids got down to it. They even did a little collective dance. Those are the moments that we want to create, just by playing beautiful music.”

“That super groovy bassline with those tight drums and the falsetto singing going crazy. And then the synth solo comes in… and the breakdwon… pfff, what a song. To me this sounds like sheer happiness. I imagine people, strangers, all dancing together on a boat with big smiles. I’m sure there will be many moments like that at Suncebeat this year.”

“This dreamy tune by the Hawaiian group Seawind, is definitely a classic to some people. I love the natural feel of how they fused jazz, Brazilian and soul into an uplifting dance tune. The combination of the amazing instrumentation and heartfelt vocals always touches me. And the cover says it all, right? Perfect for the Dalmation coast!”
