Part of the Peckham Rye Music Festival takeover
Peckham resident Ali Gibbs, aka Nebraska, has earned a place at his local festival for reasons other than his residential status. 2016 was a particularly strong year for the experienced artist, with two acclaimed releases under highly commendable labels – his first appearance on Detroit Swindle‘s Heist Recordings and his second appearance on Mister Saturday Night. Besides this, he made the small feat of launching his own label, Friends & Relations, with his Stop Playing With My Heart EP. Nebraska’s schedule was particularly notable last year, seeing him play live across Europe with the Heist Recordings crew and at one of South England’s most renowned dance festivals, Farr.
2017 has seen Nebraska off to a flying start having already released two EPs: his second on his own imprint and “a three-tracker of soul-laden sampley goodness” on Brooklyn’s Razor-N-Tape. Both releases present themselves in his usual style, akin to that of hip-hop production, following a heavily sample-based approach that utilises funk, soul and jazz as its foundation. This is a formula that, although not particularly revolutionary, never fails to deliver grooving, accessible dancefloor numbers.
His next gig this year is at Peckham Rye Music Festival’s opening weekend, Saturday 13th, and it will be his relatively new-found live show. Ahead of this night, he’s shared with us some soulful festival favourites from four talented artists.
