Enigmatic Berlin based trio ItaloJohnson step up as Tracks of the Day selectors by cherry-picking two stand-out tracks by two Detroit artists: Underground Resistance frontman Robert Hood, and artist/director/photographer/music maker Jimmy Edgar, who heads up label Ultramajic alongside Machinedrum.

Over the last six years ItaloJohnson have put out close to forty tracks across ten releases, as well as taking the helm for all-night sets on some of the world’s most revered dancefloors. Despite their success, little is known about the trio. Their RA biography is left blank, they seldom interview (and when they do it’s resolutely not about themselves, hence no comments on their selection), their social media platforms are non-existent and their vinyl-only releases are all ‘Untitled’.

Their online presence, including their press releases, are undoubtedly a satirical and tongue in cheek response to the internet. They introduced their sound to the dance music community with ITJ01, with a bio explaining the trio as one man rather than three, and described the release as “…functional tracks appropriate for any party mood”. Their ninth release, ITJ09, came out in 2015 alongside the following description. Flippant, and loaded with underground dance cliché:

“…Each copy of ITJ09 was hand-stamped in a derelict basement deep in Neukolln by gypsies and three anonymous DJs who don’t show their faces because they would rather “let the music speak for itself.”… Don’t hesitate – or you will pay 50 Euro for it at Record Loft.”

Since their first release in 2010 they have steadily and consistently put out some of the most exciting house and techno we’ve seen in recent years, exclusively on vinyl 12” and 10”. Their sets showcase the breadth of their interest and taste; their recent all night set at South London club Phonox for example traversed from unforgiving techno, through acid, to a slew of dubbed out cuts and garage inspired house.

Now, for 2017, they put out their first Italojohnson remix package, 07a1, released on 21st April. On remix duty? Floorplan and Jimmy Edgar. In celebration of ITJRMX01, Italojohnson have selected two of each of their all time favourite choice releases from Robert Hood and Jimmy Edgar, check them below.
