In the two years since its inception, Berlin-based 47 Records has pressed nine releases, featured 25 artists and hosted 14 parties across three countries. With two EPs out already this year, and the promise of more events in Berlin, Amsterdam and Paris, 2017 looks to be big year for the label, headed by techno heavyweight, Tommy Four Seven.

February saw the release of 47008, the label’s eighth compilation EP with guest features from Ancient Methods, OAKE and VSK. The overarching result is a release of club-ready techno bangers delving into hard, dark and industrial territories. Tommy’s regular spot is filled by the ferocious ‘Dromod’, a confident exploration of distortion which resonates with the label’s industrial tendencies. VSK’s contribution, the brooding yet assured ‘Breaking Symmetry’asserts itself as a standout track, re-affirming the Italian-born, Berlin-based producer’s reverence in the techno scene. The driving ‘Systems’ from Ancient Methods is characteristically dynamic, while OAKE’s ‘Anaximenes’ verges toward the more hypnotic and experimental. Each number on the release addresses distinct nuances, but the record comes together to represent the infallible trademark techno associated with 47 Records.

47009 marks the beginning of a new direction for the label – a string of solo EPs. Out this Friday, the first of these solo releases sees the elusive and esoteric Headless Horseman deliver four effectual and industrial tracks, dubbed by Hardwax as “peerless stepping techno devastation!”. Shrouded in a mask of tassels and with a name borrowed from folklore, the sense of mystery behind Headless Horseman has been a persistent subject of speculation within the industry, and the deep and journeying sonic explorations of 47009 mirror the horseman’s enigmatic persona. ‘Bleeding Arrows’ encapsulates the dark and arcane mood that is so quintessential to his sound, while ‘Shattered’ is a stomping industrial endeavour, ideally suited for the floor. ‘The Day She Vanished’ impresses with its understated reticence, while the pounding ‘Widow’s Peak’ is an intrepid venture epitomising big room techno. Headless Horseman will debut his live A/V show, as seen at Berlin’s Atonal Festival, at Village Underground’s famous Superstition night on 1st September. The line-up also boasts UVB, debuting his Hybrid DJ Set, Killawatt and Tommy Four Seven himself united by an ethos to celebrate an experimental and dynamic approach towards electronic music. In celebration of Headless Horseman’s release, 47’s latest compilation, we’ve invited them pick out some music this week. Under the theme “tracks that remind you of 47 parties”, four of the label’s artists, including head honcho Tommy Four Seven, have dug out some worldies for us this week.
