Part of the Honey Soundsystem takeover
Closing out the Honey Soundsystem takeover, we have the final co-founder of the collective Josh Cheon. His impact within the music scene goes beyond just this collective however. The avid vinyl-focused DJ and collector grew up just outside of New York, specifically The Bank, a goth club that laid the foundations for his obsession with dark synthesiser-driven music. Later on he landed a summer job with Metropolis Records in Philadelphia who released modern EBM and synthpop bands like Wolfshiem, VNV Nation and Covenant as well as classic darkwave bands Clan Of Xymox and Bunnydrums.
He also became the music director for 90.3FM The Core for two years and held internships at Beggars Banquet/4AD/Matador and DFA Records while attending Rutgers University. These internships gave Josh a first hand look at independent record labels and how they operate. 2006 saw him move to San Fransisco, where a love for disco revival manifested itself in him and the-now Honey Soundsystem crew. 2009 saw another of his projects come to fruition. Dark Entries was created by Josh to release out of print and unreleased underground 80s music as well as contemporary bands referencing that sound.
Its mission is to take great care in preserving sound quality and respecting the aesthetics of its artists. Dark Entries was the first 7″ released by UK post-punk band Bauhaus and all of the label’s releases reflect the DIY days of 1980s independent record labels. The imprint entrusts all of their projects with the one of the best engineers in California, George Horn at Fantasy Studios, who remasters each release using his 50+ years of knowledge in the industry. Don’t expect to find CDs anytime soon, Dark Entries will only release vinyl since they value the importance of surface to sound ratio and enjoy loud records.
With such a devotion to music and an incredibly interesting journey thus far, we’re excited to share his track picks closing out what’s been a brilliant week showcasing Honey Soundsystem’s ethos and memories. Expect blissful disco and new beat acid.
