Part of the Honey Soundsystem takeover
Brooklyn-based producer Justin Cudmore is one of Honey Soundsystem’s rising talents. With a sound shaped from classic house and Detroit techno, his output is already way beyond his years – giving him all the makings of an international artist.
Hailing from the capital of Illinois, his musical beginnings were forged during his childhood as a drummer with an eclectic love for early disco music. As he grew older, he began to make his way into the electronic music community – compiling mixtapes, putting a new spin on live band music and DJing at parties, which then led him to start his own Physical Challenge night back in 2007. A move to Chicago then steered him into work for acclaimed blog Little White Earbuds, and as he became further and further immersed in Chicago’s prosperous music scene he began to grow as an impeccable DJ. A compulsive crate digger, Justin Cudmore has an authentic understanding of electronic music’s vibrant heritage; weaving in important elements from early house and techno to make music that sounds as true to its roots as some of the early pioneers of the scene he is truly connected with.
In 2013, Justin Cudmore moved to New York and struck up an affinity with NYC party movement The Bunker’s resident Mike Servito. Local forerunner Mike Servito went on to become somewhat of a mentor, and along with local producer and Little White Earbuds friend Gunnar Haslam, the three artists built the foundations for Cudmore’s 2016 debut 12” on Honey Soundsystem’s HNYTRX Crystal – with Cudmore delivering the original production, and Servito and Haslam providing the remixes. This year saw Cudmore venture into the realms of production again, with a 4-track release on The Bunker named Forget It featuring 303 acid-tinged cuts that prove he can switch between both contemporary and classic sounds. As part of this week’s Honey Soundsystem takeover, we’ve been given a peek into Justin Cudmore’s record collection.
