Arnaud Bernard aka Onra should need little introduction. His talent for delivering emotive, soulful hip hop that really hits the spot is demonstrated through his multitude of releases since 2006. Hailing from Paris, Arnaud has produced six albums and even more EPs, but this high quantity hasn’t set the quality aside. Through his various releases, Arnaud evidently takes influences from a hugely eclectic range of sounds, from jazz through to country; carefully and respectfully using these styles to craft a unique and refreshing take on hip hop. He’s collaborated with a wide range of rappers during this decade of his career, which confirms his ability as a producer. What also sets Onra apart is his DJing ability, curating all forms of melodic, emotional grooves with a heavy soul and RnB lean during his mixes.

With no releases yet this year himself, we invited Arnaud in to tell us what he’s been listening too and gaining inspiration from. So, lets get down to it, Onra’s favourite releases of 2016 so far…

“Second EP of one of my earliest collaborator, producer and friend Byron The Aquarius. Some deep-house grooves infused with live frequencies as he likes to call it, as well as a couple super smooth tracks reminiscing of early Dwele works, overall a great project that will surely establish the legacy of Byron The Aquarius for a long time.”

“I’ve been saying it for a long time but Waltaa aka Walter Mecca is a pure genius. Unique talent and personality, the kind of guy who can pick up any instruments in a week. Unique blend of progressive rock, jazz, beats and drum n bass (what the fuck). This EP got released on vinyl, it’s out there if you can find it!”

“Coming from Canada but living in Tokyo, this underground and secretive producer deserves more recognition. This project (like all his other works, check out his bandcamp) has that unique flavor, smooth hip-hop beats inspired by 90’s R&B, always make your head nod. Lots of subliminal messages in this cryptic album, definetely makes it a classic to me.”

“Amazing album by this Modern Funk band from Florida. Released by one of my favorite labels PPU/Cosmic Chronic, this is a true gem. Very well produced, sounds amazing, great ideas and themes, chords, vocals… 10/10.”
