Harvey Sutherland is a relatively new artist on my radar. After hearing his live Boiler Room set in his hometown of Melbourne at the beginning of the year I was hooked, and immediately scoured the web for more of his music. Seven months later I got the opportunity to witness him in action at the Dimensions afterparty at Sunfall (which was one of our highlights), cementing my love for his breezy lo-fi and celestial funk.
Debuting in 2013 with his cassette release Nexus on This Thing Records – ‘a trip through lo-fi boogie and Roland house music’ – he soon gained attention. After two further EPs on Voyage Recordings and Echovolt in 2014, sprinkled with a number of one-off releases and remixes, he was named one of FACT’s ‘Australian Electronic Artists to Watch in 2015’ and made his European debut in May 2015 with an eleven-date club tour. Shortly after his latest 12” Bermuda found a home at the legendary MCDE Recordings, which has developed into his latest live formulation: a futuristic disco trio by the same name featuring Melbourne session drummer Graeme Pogson and Tamil Rogeon on electric strings. As he currently tours Europe with this three-piece live show, he’s stopped by to pick out Tracks Of The Day, choosing four of his favourite warm-up cuts.
“I love playing a warm-up set, but I especially like picking opening tunes where you can really create a mood, even if you’re just playing to the bar staff at first.”
