Decorated by their multi-genre discography and a commendable collective musical know-how, it’s no wonder Dark Sky find themselves with the success they enjoy at present. Seven years on from their inception, a constant rota of innovative releases and DJ/live touring has seen them climb from their humble beginnings to heights that well and truly surpass the, ahem, dark sky above them. With an ability to tug on your heartstrings on one release, obliterate all feelings of warmth with pure ruggedness on the next, and then piece the two contrasting emotions expertly back together with another release, a wide base of support from across the globe would be the least you’d expect to see for the London-based duo. Their debut album Imagin on Monkeytown Records in 2014 is emblematic of their remarkable versatility, and their ability to step outside of a club-focused workspace to create standalone pieces of art only heightens their eminence in the electronic sphere.

As we wait patiently for the imminent second album on Monkeytown, we are very pleased to present Dark Sky as today’s Tracks of the Day selectors. Inside are four records that have been recent additions to their record bag — so be sure to look out for them on their bi-weekly show on NTS Radio. Alternatively, if you can’t wait until then, be sure to get yourself down to Moth Club in Hackney tomorrow evening to catch the pair for a steal at £6.

“This is off the new LP called Yalta, which is full of great tunes so I struggled to pick just one. For me ‘Goldbaby’ is a proper headphones track; that rich, dark pad from the very beginning makes me zone out and get completely engrossed in this song. The only real sense of progression comes from the playful drum samples, made up of these amazing clicks and pops, enriched with reverb that add to the overall ambience. The abrupt ending snaps you out of your meditative state, it’s almost destructive and doesn’t end how you think it would but I find this makes it even more interesting.”

“I was lucky enough to catch DJ Sotofett play at the Columbian bar next to Corsica Studios earlier this year and I was hooked on the grooves I was hearing, I’ve been following his releases ever since. His latest track on the Finnish label Keys of Life is a beautiful percussive and melodic workout, the kind of track that I’ve always have a soft spot for. The goosebump-inducing pad that comes in half way through really takes it up a gear, leaving you floating in ozone layer territory.”

“This one is off his album entitled Howl on Erased Tapes and it really grabbed me when I heard it. I love the imperfections and pitch warping on the main synth sound that is always slightly out of tune. These subtle variations bring the track alive in a beautiful way. The super clean drums juxtapose this which creates an interesting sonic contrast but the groove just carries you along in a wonderfully low-slung way. I can imagine the build at the end working really well in a live scenario.”

“I’ve been a fan of these guys ever since their release on Lobster Theremin last year and so was excited to get hold of this new EP for Pacific Command. This is my favourite on the release: a dark techno weapon which starts quite ominously with harsh drums and an unsettling texture but soon evolves into this really euphoric moment before finishing on those really thunderous drums.”
