Today, our Tracks of the Day come from Tom Reid, known more commonly as the London-based producer and DJ, Mosca. Juggling responsibilities as a record label owner, touring DJ and progressive producer attempting to bridge the gap between “dark but still sexy” tunes, Reid certainly manages to keep himself busy. Add a monthly Wednesday night NTS radio show into the mix, alongside the inevitable tolls of daily life, and it makes it all the more welcoming to learn that he’s managed to maintain a measure of lightheartedness and tongue-in-cheek humour. You needn’t look any further than his pinned tweet in order to begin to understand the type of artist, and person, Mosca is.

A self-confessed lover of groove, experiment and rawness – mixed in with a sizeable pinch of emotion and allure – Mosca successfully translates this passion into releases, whilst simultaneously supporting fellow artists that walk a similar, criss-crossed path. His label, Not So Much, has totted up four releases thus far, three of which have been Mosca’s own production. With Samuel, a side project of Hessle Audio’s Ploy, making up the remaining release, there is a clear vision and direction within Not So Much that Reid is successfully honing in on with each EP.

It’s this vision and overarching passion for bounce and simultaneous bewitchment that is also evident within his picks for today. Italian distortion, Japanese hypnosis, Irish roll and German ambience are succinct summaries of the tunes guided to below. Check them out and broaden your horizons just that little bit more.

“This one took me by surprise. Can’t say I’m exactly a fan of Tiga’s Turbo label… it’s not quite the go-to label for restraint anyway. But this one by PK, without the vocal, just oozes class. I love trax like this, showerface is the only way to describe it really, but with such minimal elements and none of the usual tricks, it’s hard to do, believe me. Bravo!”

“Nasty but nice… Distortion/saturation/general noisiness is a funny one – I remember first playing with vacuum tube distortion when I was a teenager and everything sounding AMAZING on first listen. But it’s a fine art getting it really perfect, and fifteen years later it’s still just as difficult. These Italians do it well though.”

“Can’t find the new Powder on Youtube but this one from six months ago is just as good, if not better – nobody does awkwardly rolling hypnosis quite like Powder, she’s got that otherworldly thing going on that Qu does so well, tiny tonal irregularities and slices of Lynch and little globules of wrongness falling sideways…”

“Went to see these four masters live recently. Imagine this in a pitch black church with a couple of bottles of red inside you.”
