Those who know J. Tijn know his music is not for the faint hearted. Those who don’t know J. Tijn ought to know, unless you get frightened off by the first few bars which is quite possible… Jesse Kuye’s brand of no frills, gritty, industrial techno has gained him huge attention over the past few years, releasing on some of our most highly acclaimed labels such as Pennyroyal, Power Vacuum and Resin. His Half Empty Half Full EP for WNCL Recordings last year demonstrated a deeper side to his production, giving light to more versatility in his music.

In light of this, we asked Jesse to pick four of tracks that inspire his production. What we get is a selection of cuts that hold elements he truly admires and likes to sample, from hip hop to grime to dubstep to punk. Also, check out the recent interview with Stray Landings, where Jesse describes his top favourite gigging experiences.

“When I first heard this I was making grime with not a lot of percussion at all and could never work out why my tunes sounded so empty. I heard a Quest show from React FM after not hearing anything from Antisocial for about a year and I couldn’t get over the drums in all the tunes he was playing. For the next year or so everything I made had about twelve tambourines, twenty tablas and a hundred shakers in.”

“This is the first tune I can actively remember liking primarily because of the volume of the ride cymbals. I can barely make anything now without putting them in at some point, always loud too lol.”

“Almost like a V.I.P of “Duppy”. This one dropped at a time when if you showed me anything with a 4×4 beat I’d have said “What the fuck is this euro dance shit?”. Funny how things turn out.”

“This is a Tony Hawk’s Skateboarding anthem. Loved it since I was about seven and have sampled/mangled”
