Omar Mccutcheon, better known by his alias Batu, is a true musical entrepreneur. His reach spans through DJing, production, his label Timedance as well as putting on some killer parties. Having debuted on Pinch’s label Cold Recordings, his music has since been released on Livity Sound, Hotline Recordings, Mistry, Tempa as well as his own Timedance, which was recently labelled “the future of UK music” by Semtek and Bruce.

Batu’s music, inspired by UK’s dance music culture and – in particular, jungle, dubstep and grime – features powerful percussive elements and ventures outside the realms of normal sound structures. Through his imprint he also hosts semi-regular events that have seen the likes of Peverelist, Metrist, Asusu, Nick Craddock, Bake, Beneath, Bruce and Untold play, with the next instalment inviting A Made Up Sound and Lurka to spin some records.

We’ve been big fans of Batu since hearing his first release, so we invited him in ahead of his next party to share some records with us. Providing an insight into his musical inspirations with four tracks he is listening to right now, here are his Tracks of the Day selections.

“I wish I knew more Afrobeats stuff, it seems to be an absolute gold mine. The chorus and the horns on this track are so infectious. It’s really refreshing to hear pop music that is completely separated from the white/western entertainment machine. Afrobeats feels truly African and proud of it, which is really important!”

“Usher has been making bangers for so long. I heard this one the other day in a bait bar with some people I work with, had to Shazam it straight away. He has such a great voice and rhythm to his delivery.”

“I was listening to loads of DNB when this came out. I remember hearing DBridge play this on Rinse and searching for an ID for weeks. A real lesson in how to utilise a simple loop into a killer club track. So much tension! Basically the 170 equivalent of Ongie Bongie.”

“I’m such an AMUS/2562 fan boy that it was really hard to pick one track. This one falls at a nice period of his back cat where his sound was somewhere between dubstep and his switch back into more techno(ish) stuff. He has such a great ear for swing, something i’m really envious of. Absolutely stoked to bring him to Bristol at the start of April for one of my Timedance parties!”
